Gospel channel, diaspora donations, and the FCRA notice
A white government envelope arrived at Lalrinkima's Chanmari flat on a Monday in March 2026. Ministry of Home Affairs letterhead. It took him three readings of the first paragraph to understand what it was saying.

๐ต Lalrinkima, 38, runs a Mizo-language gospel channel from Aizawl โ 320,000 YouTube subscribers, devotional hymns, Sunday-service livestreams, weekly sermon recordings. He operates under his own name, through a personal savings account, deeply embedded in the Mizoram Presbyterian Synod community. Since 2021, NRI Mizo diaspora in Texas, Maryland, Sydney, and Toronto had been sending small donations โ โน500 here, โน2,000 there โ via PayPal and Wise. The channel was a ministry. The donors were church communities. The amounts totalled โน6.8 lakh over three years.
๐จ The MHA inquiry notice classified every inflow as "foreign contribution" under Section 2(1)(h) of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act 2010. The notice cited Section 11 โ he had no FCRA registration. It cited the requirement for an FCRA-designated account at SBI New Delhi Main Branch (Branch Code 00691) โ he had a regular savings account at SBI Chanmari. It gave him thirty days to respond with full transaction records and an explanation of non-compliance. Non-response could trigger a Section 3 cessation order and a retrospective five-year inquiry. Lalrinkima sat with the letter for four days without telling his wife.
๐ The Synod elder pointed him to Mawia Ralte, a Mizo lawyer near Zarkawt junction who had handled FCRA matters for church-affiliated trusts. Mawia installed the AI agent, set it to Mizo, and used it to confirm the exact compliance path โ FC-3A registration (not the limited FC-3B prior-permission route, which is project-specific and insufficient for recurring diaspora giving), the mandatory SBI New Delhi Main Branch account, and the annual FC-4 return obligation that follows registration. The agent verified the FCRA 2010 statute sections directly. Lalrinkima paused the PayPal and Wise links while the application was in process, posted a brief note to his community, and received understanding from diaspora churches in Toronto and Sydney.
โ The MHA acknowledged the notice-response without issuing a cessation order. The FC-3A registration application is in processing. The SBI New Delhi Main Branch FCRA account is open. The diaspora donation links will be restored once registration is confirmed, and the annual FC-4 return is now on the compliance calendar.
๐ฎ๐ณ Lalrinkima is not unusual. Every devotional-content creator with an overseas audience โ bhajan channels, pravachan series, church media teams, gurudwara livestreams โ faces the same exposure. The amounts are small. The intent is spiritual. The legal category under FCRA 2010 is identical. The MHA has been systematically tightening enforcement. Most creators discover this the same way Lalrinkima did: thirty days after the notice arrives.
