Her internship created a ghost UAN account.
👩🎓 Lalthansangi Pachuau, 23, BA Economics from Mizoram University, did an unpaid internship at an NGO in Aizawl in June 2024. The supervisor asked her to register formally. She got a UAN number and a printout. She never thought about it again. Until May 2025, when she tried to register for the Mizoram Rozgar Mela—a job fair—and the portal said: "Incomplete EPFO account. Cannot proceed." 📵
🚨 The problem
The NCS (National Career Service) portal checks if your UAN is complete before letting you apply for job fairs. An "incomplete" account means the Aadhaar hasn't been linked. Lalthansangi's NGO internship UAN was created without her Aadhaar number. No one told her to link it. No system sent her a reminder. The gap stayed invisible until she tried to use it, sixteen days before the Mela deadline.

India's job portals talk to each other, but they don't always listen in real time. A UAN account exists for years before someone needs it. When it's needed, the systems that check it assume it's complete. The gap between "account exists" and "account is usable" costs first-generation graduates entire application seasons.
