The Aadhaar biometric failed. The entire pension froze.
🧑⚕️ Temjen, 39, was a school administrator in Itanagar. His father, Yangda, 68, a retired schoolteacher, lived alone in Banderdewa, 42 km away. Yangda received ₹1,000 monthly ST old-age pension from Arunachal Pradesh—deposited reliably for eight years. In April, an SMS arrived: Jeevan Pramaan biometric validation required at a seeding centre in Itanagar. Mandatory. 30-day deadline. Yangda didn't visit. In April mid-month, the pension stopped arriving. No notice. No explanation. Just silence.

🚨 The problem
Jeevan Pramaan is a biometric proof-of-life system: pensioners scan fingerprint/iris at designated centres annually; match against Aadhaar in New Delhi; proof generated; pension continues. Yangda's biometric didn't match (elderly fingerprints degrade; iris recognition fails; equipment at the seeding centre was outdated). The system didn't explain why. It only said: biometric failed, pension suspended. Re-verification required tribal-status certificate re-confirmation AND another biometric attempt. Two requirements, two separate offices, notice in Hindi (Yangda speaks Nyishi), office hours vague ("9 AM to 1 PM, except Thursdays"), no street address.
🚀 How GabFORGE helped
Temjen's sister-in-law, Aditya, who works in municipal government and speaks Nyishi fluently, suggested the app. She installed it on Yangda's phone. That evening, Temjen photographed all three documents: the SMS in English-Hindi, the DC office notice in Hindi, the seeding-centre closure notice.
- 🔍 Read the letters in Nyishi. The app translated the SMS and notices into clear Nyishi, explaining: biometric failure triggers automatic re-verification under GoI guidelines. Tribal-status certificate doesn't expire—it was pre-verified at original pension enrollment. The re-verification requirement was a system error, not a legitimate double-check.
- 💬 Mapped the actual process. Biometric failure alone requires one seeding-centre visit only. Tribal-status check is automatic background verification, not a separate requirement. Visit seeding centre once, complete biometric re-scan, done.
- 📞 Found the seeding centre's actual address and helpline. Government building, Naharlagun Road, Sector 5. Open 9 AM–1 PM, Monday–Saturday (no closure on Thursdays). Helpline for elderly who cannot visit in person.
Temjen took his father to the seeding centre on a Saturday. Biometric was rescanned. It matched. Pension was restored. Yangda received two months of backpay plus the current month.
🇮🇳 Why this matters
Biometric systems treat failure as a security issue. Elderly citizens' fingerprints degrade. Equipment outdoors varies. The system doesn't distinguish between tampering and aging. When failure is treated as fraud, entire pensions freeze while families decode notices in languages they don't speak.
The long version has the SMS in English-Hindi, the office notice vaguely addressed "to Aadhaar number," the seven weeks without pension, the seeding-centre closure notice that said "except Thursdays," and the moment Aditya translated the bureaucracy into Nyishi.
